The Nickel Belt PC Riding Association is once again hosting its Freddie Castron Turkey Drive, an annual fundraiser named for the man who began it all.
Freddie Castron, who passed away in 2013, began the Turkey Drive 20 years ago. The drive sees riding association members purchase turkeys that are then donated to the Blue Door Soup Kitchen.
A successful entrepreneur for more than 50 years with Blackwood Hodge Equipment Limited and then Cast Resource Equipment, Castron was the first businessman to be inducted into the SAMSSA (MineConnect) Hall of Fame.
“His legacy of kind generosity lives on especially at this time of the year,” the association said in a press release.
Emails with donation details have now gone out to members and past donors of the Nickel Belt PC Riding Association. The drive is open to non-riding association members as well. Those who would like to participate can email the organizers at [email protected] or [email protected].
“This year is a special year, a wonderful way to keep the memory of Freddie alive in our community, and to help others,” said Fred Slade, president of the riding association.
For those who prefer to have the turkey for themselves, employees or clients, the turkeys will be delivered before Christmas.
