Almost 45 percent of people in Greater Sudbury who rented apartments in 2001 spent more than 30 percent of their income on housing, according to a report on poverty released Tuesday.

Almost 45 percent of people in Greater Sudbury who rented apartments in 2001 spent more than 30 percent of their income on housing, according to a report on poverty released Tuesday.

This statistic, based on the 2001 census, is much higher than the national average, which stands at 39.6 percent.

The Canadian Council on Social Development included Greater Sudbury as one of 25 cities profiled in their urban poverty project.

Greater Sudbury's average gross monthly rent was $569  in 2001 and the national average was $648. The city had a average employment income of $31,063, which is slightly below the national average, which was $31,757.
