Two people who made outstanding contributions to the community died Monday, Jan. 8.

Ruth (May) Reid, a former teacher at Sudbury Secondary School, was 90 years old. She died at Extendicare York.

Gervis W. Waddell, 92, the former principal of Adamsdale Public School, and a former city councillor, died at St. Joseph’s Villa.

Reid was married to the late Weir Reid (1971) and was  supportive of his work with the Mine Mill Union.

This summer she celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends at the Older Adult Centre. She and her husband had six children: Paul, Margaret, Brian, Michael, Scott and Valerie, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Waddell is survived by children: Donald, Robert, Richard, Judy, and James, and 12 grandchildren. His wife, Ellen Josephine Caswell McKessock, died in 1985.

His career as a teacher began in a one-room school house in Carling Township.

In 1941, he joined the RCAF and served overseas. When he returned home, he continued his career as an educator and served as principal of Queen Elizabeth Public School, Wembley Public School, College St. Public School, and Princess Anne Public School. He was at Adamsdale when he retired in 1977.

Born in Parry Sound, Waddell was one of the founding owners of the Caswell Motor Hotel.
