Citizens oppose LU access road

The entire crowd of 200 people attending consultations at Laurentian University's Fraser Auditorium Thursday night seemed against the idea of building a second access road to the school.

The university held the consultations to hear the views of students, staff, faculty and community members before finalizing an official position on a road the city wants to build through LU property.

At its Feb. 16 meeting, the university's board of governors adopted a preliminary position which says they “see no advantage” to a secondary access road.

The motion cites the university's environmental mandate and the fact that students use the land for field work and recreation as reasons for the position.

“I love Laurentian, but I will not like Laurentian very much if they put a road in,” said second year aquatic and terrestrial ecology student Natalie Cargill.

Many programs at the university are dependent on the natural areas on campus, and thousands of people enjoy the trail system in this area, she says.
