Update at 2:10 p.m. on March 14, 2024: 

A 60-year-old Valley East man died in Wednesday afternoon's motor vehicle incident west of Dowling on Highway 144.

The Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP issued a media release on Thursday afternoon with some new details.

A single commercial motor vehicle was involved in the incident.

The OPP Collision Reconstructionist and members of the Traffic Collision Investigative Team attended the scene and will continue to assist Nipissing West OPP officers with the investigation, which the media release noted is ongoing.

Update at 1:08 p.m. on March 14, 2024:

The City of Greater Sudbury has issued a media release regarding the death of a city employee on March 13.

They note the OPP North East Division and Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 144 west of Dowling the previous day, and that the incident resulted in the death of a municipal employee.

At the request of the family, the city will not be sharing the employee's name or identifying information.

"We are heartbroken by this loss, and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of this individual," the city's statement said.

The city has limited information on the collision, according to their media release, and the police investigation is ongoing.

"Our focus right now is on supporting the staff members who were closest to this employee."

Flags at city facilities will be lowered to half-mast on Friday in the employee's honour.

A City of Greater Sudbury employee was killed in a motor vehicle incident on Highway 144 near Dowling on Wednesday.

The incident took place shortly before 4:30 p.m. and closed the highway for several hours.

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of our dear brother yesterday, in a fatal motor vehicle accident, at work,” CUPE 4705 posted to Facebook this morning.

“We send our condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.”

A city spokesperson confirmed the death of a city employee and said a statement with more information will be released later today.

Sudbury.com reached out to Nipissing West OPP by phone this morning but did not receive an immediate response.

On the CUPE 4705 Facebook page, condolences have already started pouring in.

“He always had a joke to tell...rest in peace my friend,” one commenter wrote.

“A terrible loss he was a great friend and all around good guy RIP brother,” wrote another.

“I had the best of times working with you. Going to miss those daily laughs,” another commenter posted. “Till we meet again.”
