An extreme cold weather alert is a short-term emergency response to increase services for people who are especially vulnerable to intensely cold weather situations.

People on the street will be encouraged to voluntarily access shelters and services provided across the city. Individuals who may be at risk due to low temperatures in their own homes are also eligible for these services.

Shelters at Foyer Notre Dame and Salvation Army Centre will increase their shelter capacity where possible and exercise leniency in curfews, while the Elgin Street Mission's daytime drop-in centre will extend its hours to offer overnight service.

The city's Community Outreach Program will also provide overnight services to make contact with people on the street and to transport individuals to shelters.

Shelters do not have the authority to confine individuals without their consent, so outreach workers will be equipped with extra clothing, blankets and coffee for those who choose not to access shelter.

A hotline is available for those seeking shelter or assistance at 675-6422.

Greater Sudbury Police, Sudbury and District Health Unit and the Canadian Red Cross are partners in the extreme cold weather alert strategy for the City of Greater Sudbury.
