The city has issued an advisory regarding heavy rainfall and the possibility of localized flooding in the Greater Sudbury area, due to a low weather front that has caused rain warnings across northern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued the weather warning early Sept. 23. It begins in the Wawa area, extends north to Timmins, south to Kapuskasing and into northern Michigan, and east into Quebec.

"While we do not anticipate major flooding during this rainstorm, nature is unpredictable and it is best to be prepared for a potential emergency," Tim Beadman, the city's chief of emergency services, stated in a press release.

He addressed concerns that the current system may cause a repeat of the flooding seen in July 2009.

"Property damage which occurred during the rainstorm of July 26, 2009, was the result of heavy precipitation over a short period of time," he said. "More than 90 millimetres of rain fell in just 90 minutes. An equal amount of rainfall, spread over a longer period of time, has more opportunity to be absorbed and drained with less potential for property damage."

The Nickel District Conservation Authority also released a warning regarding the expected rainfall, noting in recent weeks, the city has had a steady amount of rainfall that has caused some areas to become saturated.

"If the maximum rainfall forecast is received localized flooding in known low-lying and vulnerable areas should be expected, especially along the smaller watercourses," the press release warns.

There is a possibility of 15 millimetres of rain before 6 p.m., and another 40 millimetres between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m., with a possibility of thunderstorms Thursday evening and overnight. Rain will continue Friday, before the system moves east into Quebec.

Reducing the chance of basement floods

  • minimize home water use during heavy rains. Do not use washing machines or dishwashers, and flush toilets in moderation
  • check storm sewers near the home for debris. If debris can be safely removed with a broom or shovel, do so. If you cannot, phone the city at 3-1-1 for assistance
  • Check home sump pumps to ensure proper operation. Also check sump pit to ensure it is not blocked with debris
  • Reposition downspout, if necessary, to direct water away from foundation and neighbouring properties
