January is Crime Stoppers Month, and last week, the City of Greater Sudbury proclaimed it as such.
This year’s theme is, “Be a Crime Stopper, keep your community safe.”
Crime Stoppers averages between 800 to 1,000 tips per year, which are forwarded to law enforcement agencies and can lead to arrests and the seizure of illicit drugs, proceeds of crime and stolen property.
By mid-December almost $800,000 in illicit drugs had been seized due to information provided through tips to Sudbury Crime Stoppers. This brings the total since inception to more than $42 million.
Additionally, 47 arrests were made in 2023.
“We thank Sudbury Crime Stoppers for their hard work and dedication to keeping Sudbury as safe as can be,” Greater Sudbury Police Service wrote on social media.
“Crime Stoppers is based on the simple principle that for every crime committed, someone other than the criminal has information that would help solve the crime and encourages members of the community to provide anonymous information to assist law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime,” the Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers’ website reads.
“By providing information through our secure phone line or online web form, tipsters remain 100 per cent anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.”
Tips can be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477.
