The City of Greater Sudbury is preparing in case of a province-wide strike by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the city's CAO said.

City officials have been meeting with the local CUPE leadership in an attempt to avoid an illegal work stoppage. However, if talks are not successful, a work stoppage could occur as early as this week or next.

?In the event of an illegal strike, the city will be forced to operate at a reduced workforce. If this occurs, essential services related to public health and safety will be our highest priority,? said the city?s chief administrative officer Mark Mieto in a press release.

The union has voted to take strike action to show its displeasure with Bill 206, a proposed bill by the Province of Ontario which provides governance changes to the Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan.

The City will keep the community informed of any disruption to services through the local media, recorded information on the its telephone line 671-CITY, and the its website at www.greatersudbury.ca.
