City of Greater Sudbury management will take over operation of the Downtown Farmer's Market from Downtown Sudbury for 2007.

The City of Greater Sudbury announced Tuesday it will oversee the operation of the Farmers' Market for the 2007 season, while working toward a permanent management solution for 2008.

"The Farmers' Market provides an important service to this community," said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez, in a news release.

"This market is a key building block for the revitalization of the downtown core and supports our local entrepreneurs. The city recognizes the significance of these goals, and, therefore, has agreed to take over the operation of the Farmers' Market from 'Downtown Sudbury'."

"Although Downtown Sudbury will no longer oversee the Farmer's Market, we look forward to working with the City of Greater Sudbury in co-operation and partnership as they take on responsibility for the operation of the Farmer's Market," said Bob Wygant, Chair of Downtown Sudbury.

"We are committed to offering our support and experience throughout this transition period."

The Farmers' Market is a permanent, year-round facility situated at the corner of Elm and Elgin Streets in Sudbury. Housing 45 seasonal vendors and a number of daily vendors from June to October, the market provides an opportunity for shoppers to purchase products such as fresh produce, meats and crafts.

During the off-season, the facility is used for many special events.
