About 1,500 city workers will vote Wednesday on a tentative agreement reached Thursday night between CUPE Local 4705 and Greater Sudbury.

Local 4705 President Darryl Taylor said Friday he couldn't reveal any details of the contract until his members have been informed first.

But Taylor did say the deal was reached Thursday following marathon talks over the last week with the conciliator.

"The last night, we actually talked long after the conciliator left until about one in the morning in an attempt to get a deal," he said.

"It was a challenging round of negotiations. We're very aware that we have to be responsible to the citizens and the taxpayers. At the same time, we had a number of issues that our members wanted addressed that were both monetary and non-monetary in nature."

In a statement, the city confirmed a tentative deal was in place “which we believe balances the interests of the organization and our employees.

“As the agreement needs to be ratified by the membership of the bargaining units, details of the agreement will not be shared at this time.”

Information sessions followed by a ratification vote will take place will take at the Garson Arena on June 29. Meetings are scheduled at 8 a.m., noon, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

"We believe we've come to the best agreement that we can at this point and we felt it was time to bring it back to the membership with the recommendation of acceptance," Taylor said.

"It was our intention from Day 1 to come to an agreement. Our members do provide vital public services and we had no desire to withdraw them unless it became absolutely necessary."
