Canada's unemployment hit 6.9 per cent in July and while Greater Sudbury saw a slight boost, the city is still among the top major cities for the number of people looking for work.
Greater Sudbury's unemployment rate was 8.1 per cent in July, an improvement over the 8.4 per cent the city posted in June.
Out of 34 major Canadian cities, only Calgary (at 8.6 per cent) had a higher unemployment rate. Barrie, at 7.9 per cent unemployment, was close behind Greater Sudbury.
Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas said in a news release that instead of helping the 36,000 Ontario residents who lost their jobs in July, the province continues to cut.
“Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals are out of touch with the reality facing Ontario families," Gélinas said.
She said Statistics Canada numbers show people working at temporary jobs, without sick days or benefits, has increased much faster than stable, permanent jobs. The MPP argued the province should be doing things like raising the minimum wage to $15/hr and investing in healthcare, education, and job training to help struggling workers.
