Clean Air Sudbury cashes in at council

City council has approved a $15,000 funding request from Clean Air Sudbury (CAS).

City council has approved a $15,000 funding request from Clean Air Sudbury (CAS).

The money will support ongoing CAS projects ($3,000), a revised air quality report ($5,000) and the Trillium Project ($7,000), and will come from the 2006 EarthCare Sudbury program budget.

Graeme Spiers, a member of CAS, told council 2002 was the last time an air quality trends study was performed and it needed to be updated to improve the poor air quality image in Greater Sudbury.

The 2002 Air Quality Trends report, authored by Potvin Air Management Consulting, showed levels of sulphur dioxide and ground level ozone concentrations in Greater Sudbury has steadily decreased since the mid 1970s.

Spiers said Lockerby Composite School, Confederation High School and eventually other secondary schools would also benefit from funding in the form of the Trillium Project.

Starting in March, air monitoring equipment will be set up at the two schools where Grade 11 and 12 students will learn how to gather data and process the results.

Spiers said teachers in the area would also receive classroom materials based on the finding of the updated Air quality Study.

The final chunk of funding will go towards ongoing CAS projects such as vehicle emissions inspection, public forums, car free day and a trip reduction challenge where 10 companies combined to reduce vehicle kilometers driven and decrease emissions.
