Rainbow District School Board and the Wabnode Centre for Aboriginal Services at Cambrian College team up to host the Attawapiskat Walk for Awareness tomorrow.

Starting from Sudbury Secondary School at 10 a.m., the walk will wind its way to end with a round dance in Bell Park at noon.

The idea for the walk came from a young person who was concerned about the many suicide attempts occurring in the community of Attawapiskat.

Born of one student’s concern for the high number of suicide attempts in the remote northern community, the walk, which is open to the community, aims to both show support for the youth of Attawapiskat and also raise awareness of the situation in many remote reserves.

The theme of the walk is Youth for Youth (Y4Y).

Among the walkers will be 19 young people from Attawapiskat.

According to a news release, First Nation participants are encouraged to bring their drums and to honour the connection to the land, women are encouraged to wear their long skirts.

Water will be provided and the concession stand at Bell Park will be open to purchase food.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can contact the Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation online here, or call 866-508-6795. All proceeds will go directly to Attawapiskat First Nation.
