Construction begins on completing one-site hospital

EllisDon, one of the province's larges construction firms, will start preliminary construction work on Greater Sudbury Hospital's one-site completion project starting Monday.

The province announced last week the London-based construction company won the contract for the project.

The company was due to set up trailers for workers in one of the hospital's parking lots some time today(Thursday). Fences will be put up around the construction site.

EllisDon will bring in a front-end loader to start cleaning up debris around the south entrance to the hospital Monday. An excavator will also start doing some work to excavaate a huge hole where the hospital's centre tower will be located.

“This is really general on-site mobilization,” said hospital spokesperson Sean Barrette. “They're getting themselves ready and doing the groundwork that's necessary to get going so they'll be able to launch construction.”

The one-site hospital is schedule to be completed in the late fall or early winter of 2009.
