One of the candidates running in a city ward with no incumbent is hoping members of the public will help fund his election campaign.

Derek Young, best known for his work with Theatre Cambrian, is one of six people running in Ward 11, a seat held last term by Lynne Reynolds, who isn't seeking reelection.

Young has set up a GoFundMe campaign in hopes the public will financially support his campaign.

“These are critical and important times in our community,” Young writes on the page. “We need strong, youthful, progressive, collaborative leadership to move our city forward with projects like the Kingsway Entertainment District, which can help grow our tax base and increase a safe quality of life that we work hard for and deserve in Greater Sudbury.

“To achieve this, I need your help. There are many ways you can help. Please consider canvassing with your neighbours, spreading the word on social media, taking a lawn sign or even a small campaign donation.”

Young has also created a campaign website.

The fundraising campaign has been active for 18 days, but has yet to attract any donations.

Also running in Ward 11 are Elizabeth De Luisa, Terry Kett, Kevin Lalonde, Bill Leduc and John Lindsay. Election day is Oct. 22.
