At the city council meeting Wednesday (Nov. 28), Ward 12 Councillor Joscelyne Landry-Altmann introduced a notice of motion calling for the establishment of a municipal heritage advisory group.

Altmann’s motion stated the conservation of heritage resources is a municipal responsibility and helps protect an “irreplaceable asset and resource which create community pride and identity and benefit both present and future generations.”

She suggested an 11-person panel consisting of:
- two local representatives from the Northern Ontario Society of Architects,
- one from the Sudbury District Archives Interest Group, one representative from the development community,
- two city councillors, and
- five citizens with expertise in local history, culture, geography or anthropology.

The motion also calls for staff from planning services and the library and heritage (museum) resources to work with the advisory panel.

The introduction of this motion by Altmann didn’t come as a surprise. At the beginning of November, the Downtown Village Development Corporation (DVDC) announced its interest in establishing this type of a committee.

In a news release issued at the time, Susan Thompson, the director of DVDC, said she had the support several councillors, including Altmann, who would be taking the lead by presenting a motion in the near future.

The motion will be discussed and voted on at the next city council meeting on Dec. 12.
