Councillors expected to rule on Lily Creek school

The city's planning committee will decide Oct. 17 whether a 450 student elementary school should be built on part of the Lily Creek marsh.

The city's planning committee will decide Oct. 17 whether a 450 student elementary school should be built on part of the Lily Creek marsh.

The issue was supposed to be decided nearly a month ago, but the French Catholic school board decided to do a traffic study first.

The were responding to the concerns of angry residents, who feel the school will increase already heavy traffic in the area and ruin an ecologically sensitive area.

The 1.9 hectares of land where the school would be built is currently owned by Jay M Holdings Ltd., Mirror Management Ltd., Vinca Estates Ltd., 908498 Ontario Ltd. and the City of Greater Sudbury.

The new school, which will replace the aging Ecole St. Denis on Regent St., will be located adjacent to the James Jerome Complex, on the south side of Centennial Dr.

Residents are also upset about council's decision last week to allow the development of another nearby piece of property.

A $13 million medical office building will be put up by developer Ed Masotti next to the Shell gas station on Centennial Dr., across the road from the Hon. James Jerome Sports Complex.
