Despite dry conditions and hot temperatures that continue to persist, there was only one new forest fire reported in the northeast region yesterday.

That fire (Guelph 1) is about one hectare in size and is classified as not yet under control. It's located in the Wainfleet bog. Two fire crews, one incident commander and a safety officer have been assigned to the fire, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said.

Closer to home, Sudbury 35 is under control and still burning 85 hectares north of Warren. Infrared scanning continues on this fire, MNRF says, finding fewer and fewer hotspots as the days pass. The ministry reported crews have made good progress and some were to be freed up yesterday so they may be freed up for other attack duties.

The forest fire hazard remains moderate to extreme for areas in the central and southern portions of the region, while both the northern and far northern regions are showing a low to moderate hazard.

The other fires in the region are:

  • Parry Sound 23 is under control at 0.2 of a hectare
  • Timmins 8 is under control at 2.2 hectares
  • Cochrane 10 is being observed at 1 hectare
  • Cochrane 9 is being observed at 3 hectares
  • Sudbury 30 is under control at 0.3 hectares
  • Sault Ste. Marie 21 is being held at 1.2 hectares
  • Hearst 5 is under control at 2,574 hectares
  • Hearst 4 is under control at 475 hectares
  • Wawa 7 is under control at 294 hectares
