A retired professor of French studies and translation at Laurentian University, Dickson, who grew up in an English home in Toronto, Dickson enthusiastically shared his passion for French-Canadian culture and art with students and the world since the 1970s.

He has published numerous books of French poetry, and wrote songs for the musical group CANO.

Dickson won critical acclaim in 2004 when he published Champion et Ooneemeetoo, a French-language translation of Tomson Highway's novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen.

In 2002, he won the Governor General's Literary Award for French poetry, making Dickson the first professor at Laurentian to be bestowed with the prestigious honour. Last summer, Dickson received an honourary degree from Laurentian.
