Natural Resources Canada has confirmed that a 2.9 magnitude earthquake originated 15 km southwest of Sudbury at around 8:40 p.m.

"A quake this size is definitely large enough that you'd feel it in the surrounding area but not large enough that it would cause any serious damage," said Trevor Allen, seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

"It's a small shake and we expect to see one in that area about every year or so."

The exact coordinates for the epicentre of the quake are 46.4 Latitude, -81.14 Longitude.

Allen says that Natural Resources Canada will not know the exact cause of the quake until further analysis is conducted tomorrow.

"There may still be an aftershock, but we haven't detected one as of yet."
