The project director of Vale's $1-billion Clean AER project will give an update on its progress at a Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) keynote Thursday evening.

Dave Marshall will review Vale's emissions reduction progress to date, present the process followed in the development of the project, and discuss the project's scope and how the changes will contribute to the reduction in emissions from the operations.

The Clean AER project is expected to reduce Vale's sulphur dioxide levels by 85 per cent from current levels and significantly reduce metals and particulate emissions.

The project will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent.

The presentation will also provide some insight into the particular challenges of implementing a $1-billion project in the heart of an 80-year-old operating smelter.

In his 25 years with Vale, Marshall’s experience has encompassed design engineering, studies management, project management and project implementation in the base metals smelting and refining industry with a particular focus on brownfield project development.

His involvement over the past nine years in the Clean AER project has provided him a unique perspective, CIM stated in a news release.

The talk will take place at Dynamic Earth's Atlas Copco Theatre on Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the general public, who are not Canadian Institute of Mining members, are $15 at the door.
