The Sudbury Playground Hockey League (SPHL) is inviting families to participate in the first annual “Donate Blood for Life” campaign.

Donate blood between July 14 and 31 to receive $10 off a child’s hockey registration fee for the 2008-09 season. Simply indicate participation with the SPHL group and a card indicating blood donation date will be provided.

To meet Canada’s future blood needs, Canadian Blood Services is encouraging Canadians to join the movement, share their vitality and become regular donors. The organization must recruit 90,000 new donors every year to keep up with growing demand for blood and blood products, stated a news release.

On average, every minute of every day someone in Canada requires blood or blood components, the release continued. Families who participate in the SPHL Donate Blood For Life will be helping to ensure an adequate blood supply for those in need over the summer. Typically, donations decrease over long weekends and the summer because people are away or busy with family activities. But the demand for blood is constant.

Canadian Blood Services is located at 235 Cedar St. To make an appointment or for medical inquiries, phone 1-888-236-6283. Appointments can also be booked by e-mail at [email protected]. Walk-ins and new donors are welcome.
