Copper Cliff family physician Dr. Ian Symington is the federal Conservative Party candidate for the riding of Sudbury.

Conservatives in the Sudbury riding have nominated Dr. Ian Symington as their candidate for the next federal election.

The riding association made the announcement July 30.

Symington is a married father of three children who grew up in Copper Cliff. A family physician for 20 years, Symington sees patients at the Copper Cliff Medical Centre as well as at Health Sciences North. The association said he regularly volunteers with local community organizations.

The candidate said only the federal Conservatives have a plan to put Canada “on the path to recovery” post-COVID-19.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the worst health and economic crisis we have seen in a generation,” Symington said in a news release. “(Leader) Erin O’Toole and the Conservative Party are the only ones who have put forward a five-point plan to put Canada on the path to recovery and secure our future. I am proud to be part of this team.”

Although an election has not been called, speculation is high that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will trigger a snap election this fall two years early, and riding associations have been nominating candidates in anticipation.

In Sudbury, MP Paul Lefebvre has already indicated he is not seeking re-election, and local Liberals selected Viviane Lapointe as their candidate. For the NDP, Dr. Nadia Verrelli was acclaimed as the candidate after contender Beth Mairs dropped out of the race.

In Nickel Belt, incumbent Liberal MP Marc Serré is seeking re-election. The Conservatives in that riding have nominated Charles Humphrey, while the NDP have tapped Andréane Chénier.
