It's Mother's Day this Sunday!

Sunday, May 14 is Mother's Day, a day set out to celebrate moms everywhere and let them know how much we appreciate all they do for us. Sudbury.com surprised a number of mothers around the city with some random acts of kindness. Check out the video here and a Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Grab your spade, jump in the car and plant a tree at Kivi:

Kivi Park is inviting the community to take part in a tree planting event on May 13 thanks to a donation of 10,000 seedlings from Vale’s Sudbury operations and A & M Reforestation. Scouts Canada, Girl Guides Canada, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Forests Ontario, CAA North & East Ontario, Pioneer Construction and Fisher Wavy are supporting the program. Local members of Scouts Canada troupes have been planting trees in Sudbury since the mid 1970s. The initiative is part of Scoutrees, a long-standing flagship community service program. Release the trout - Junction Creek Festival today:

The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee will host their ninth annual Junction Creek Festival and trout release on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Twin Forks Playground on Gary Avenue. It is free to attend, and hotdogs and drinks will be available for purchase. Attendees will release brook trout into the stream to help maintain a healthy population. Staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will be on site to assist with the release of approximately 1,000 fish. The MNRF has donated more than 25,000 brook trout since the year 2000.

Marathon Sunday: Sudbury Rocks!!! hits the downtown:

The Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run, or Walk for Diabetes is this Sunday, May 14. Donations from the Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run, or Walk for Diabetes helps the Canadian Diabetes Association provide education and services to support people in their daily fight against the disease; advocate on behalf of people with diabetes for the opportunity to achieve their highest quality of life; and break ground towards a cure. Runs and walks will be going off from 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. Check back with Sudbury.com on Sunday for coverage.

New planetarium show explores the stars through Indigenous stories:

For the first time since it opened in 2010, visitors to the Science North Planetarium will be treated to a show produced in-house by the science centre. “Under the Same Stars: Minwaadizin” is now playing in both English and French at the state-of-the-art domed theatre. The show was developed in partnership with Indigenous people from across Northern Ontario and recreates traditional Anishinaabe stories that define common constellations visible in the night sky using immersible audio-visual technology and surround sound. The latest Graphic-Con news: Bring on the cosplayers!

It may be the Year of the Villain at Graphic-Con 2017 in June, but there will be some heroic cosplayers on hand too. Comic books, anime, sci-fi, cosplay and more will take over the Sudbury Arena on June 10 as Graphic-Con returns. Of course, those who attend the con are welcome and encouraged to put their creativity on display by attending in costume. But Graphic-Con has also invited some talented travelling cosplayers to be on hand for this celebration of nerdiness. Find out who will be in attendance at this year's Graphic-Con by clicking here.

Sudbury-published titles up for lit award:

Three titles from Sudbury-based publishing house Latitude 46 have been short-listed for the Northern Lit Award. The titles include The Dependent: A Memoir of Marriage and the Military by Danielle Daniel, Somewhere Picking Dandelions by Diana Douglas, and Rule of Seconds by Shawna Diane Partridge. The Northern Lit Awards recognize the outstanding contribution Northern Ontario authors make to Northern culture. The program is jointly sponsored by Ontario Library Service-North and Northern Ontario Libraries. Read the full story here.
