A popular local family-owned ski hill won't be opening this winter.
Onaping Ski Hill, located off Municipal Road 8 in Onaping, was opened more than 50 years ago by Henry and Barbara Moser, and was taken over about 15 years ago by their son, Reinhardt Moser.
But Moser said he's just getting too old to operate the ski hill anymore.
“It's just sort of a retirement for me, that's it,” he said. “You have to be a young person to do it. Age catches up. You've got to pull the pin sometime.”
Closing the facility “isn't the greatest,” Moser said, as he's going to miss all of the people he's met at Onaping over the years.
“I thank them for their patronage, but all things come to an end,” he said.
As for whether he's going to sell the facility, which features two t-bar lifts and 12 runs, Moser said he doesn't know at this point.
“Right now it's just one hurdle at a time,” he said.
With Onaping's closure, that leaves three ski hills in Greater Sudbury, all operated by the city: Adanac Ski Hill, Lively Ski Hill and Capreol Ski Hill. For more information, visit www.greatersudbury.ca/living/ski-hills.
