A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ordination of Monsignor James Hutton takes place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on May 12.

The event starts at 7 p.m. with mass, followed by presentations and remarks at 8 p.m. and reception at 8:30 p.m. in the church hall.

Hutton was raised in Creighton Mine, and ordained there at St. Michael’s Church on May 12, 1966 by Bishop Alexander Carter.

Since that time, Monsignor Hutton has served Roman Catholics at five parishes in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. Most recently, for the past 16 years, Hutton has been the pastor and parish priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sudbury.

St. Patrick’s Church, now in its 62nd year, continues to be a thriving faith community with more than 1,460 registered families.

“Father Jim is always concerned with making people feel welcomed and at home in the parish,” said Dr. Paolo Biondi, a long-timer parishioner.

“This Christian attitude he conveys could, I think, be nicely summed up in the motto ‘All are welcome in this place.'

A recent successful capital campaign called, ‘A Hall for All’ featured the installation of an elevator for the church and many other upgrades. These will form part of Father Jim’s symbolic legacy of his concern for the sick, the frail and the elderly.”
