'Every effort' made to ensure timely massage therapy exam

A representative from the College of Massage Therapists said the regulatory body has made “every effort” to reschedule a written licensing exam in a “timely manner.”

However, a local woman who recently graduated from Lambton College's massage therapy program said the rescheduling means she'll take the exam more than five months later than she'd originally planned.

Heather Wiebe said she's been looking forward to working in her new profession, but can't until she's fully licensed.

While the regulatory body is trying to be timely, it also had to take the time to ensure the “integrity of the process” isn't compromised, Marny Hamilton, the college's director of corporate services, said in an email to Northern Life.

The massage therapists college had to ensure that “only those qualified to practise the profession are issued a certificate of registration,” she said.

In May, the regulatory body learned the exam had potentially been compromised by the harvesting and circulation of exam questions, according to an earlier press release from the College of Massage Therapists.

All written exams were temporarily suspended. The college later announced that all those who wished to take the exam could do so in Toronto Nov. 17.

Hamilton's only other comment in response to several questions posed by Northern Life is the massage therapists' college will provide further information on the Nov. 17 exam on its website, www.cmto.com, as it becomes available.
