Cowles charged with violating probation
Child killer Darryl Cowles has been charged with violating the terms of a probation order.

Cowles was taken into custody Dec. 6 by police after he allegedly was seen in the company of ?certain? children Dec. 1 in the Walden area.

Cowles spent almost 10 years in jail for manslaughter in the 1992 stabbing death of a Whitefish girl, nine-year- old Rosalynn Dupuis.

The body of the girl, which was bound to a tree, was found after a massive search in a wooded area 200 metres from her home. She had been stabbed in the chest.

Cowles, who was 15 when he killed Rosalynn, returned home in January. He had been living in a London, Ont. halfway house immediately after his release from jail in February 2001.

When he returned to this area in January, Greater Sudbury Police issued a warning about Cowles, stating there are ?reasonable and probable grounds to fear that Darryl Cowles represents a high risk for committing another serious personal injury offence.?

The service said then it had ??grave concern for the immediate safety of the public because of Cowles presence in the community.?

Catholic Board votes to close schools
Parents of children enrolled at Our Lady of Fatima School stormed out of a meeting of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board this week after trustees narrowly voted to consolidate their school with St. James School in 2004.

In a 3-2 recorded vote, board chairman Ray Vincent and trustees Robert Cunningham and Paula Peroni voted in favour of closing Our Lady of Fatima while trustees Jack Macdonald and George Middleteon voted against the motion.

Trustee Jody Cameron declared a conflict of interest and removed himself from the vote.

Trustees also unanimously voted to approve the consolidation of St. Anthony?s School at St. Francis School effective September 2003.
A recommendation to consolidate St Michael?s School at St. Francis School was defeated in a recorded vote of 4-2.

Falconbridge spending $9M on exploration
Falconbridge Ltd. plans to spend $9 million on exploration in the Sudbury area next year.

Falconbridge?s worldwide exploration budget for 2003 is expected to be $24 million.

?The focus for us in the exploration program is nickel, with precious metals as a by product,? said Caroline Casselman, the company?s director of communications and public affairs.

?We?ve had some recent successes (in finding new ore bodies in the Sudbury area) and we want to build on that,? Casselman said.

The company is currently developing promising finds at Nickel Rim South (near the Greater Sudbury airport) and Fraser-Morgan (near Onaping).
She added that Falconbridge is no longer looking ?for the motherlode? when it comes to finding new sources of ore. ?Instead, we?ve been looking at smaller properties with higher grades.?

Zellers recalls reindeer stocking holder
Zellers is recalling a Trim Shoppe brand Christmas stocking holder in the shape of a reindeer, due to a potential safety hazard. The stocking holders were sold at Zellers stores across Canada.

The particular reindeer stocking holder that is subject to the recall is made of solid metal with a silver or gold coloured finish. It has a hook designed to hold a Christmas stocking. Stocking holders were available in other seasonal shapes, however, only the reindeer shape poses this hazard.

Some of the stock contained reindeer antlers with sharp points that could pose a potential cut or puncture hazard to customers. Zellers has received one report of an incident involving a customer.

Zellers has removed all reindeer stocking holders from its stores and urges customers to stop using the item immediately and return it to any Zellers store for a full refund.
