The Elgin Street Mission is announcing an extreme cold weather alert on behalf of Centre de Sante Communautaire de Sudbury.

An extreme cold weather alert is a short-term emergency response to increase services for people who are especially vulnerable to intensely cold weather conditions.

People on the street will be encouraged to voluntarily access shelters and services. Individuals who may be at risk due to low temperatures in their homes are also eligible for these services.

Under a community partnership agreement, agencies will extend the following services:

Shelters: Foyer Notre Dame and the Salvation Army Centre will increase their shelter capacity where possible and exercise leniency in curfews.

Drop-In Centre: The Elgin Street Mission daytime drop-in centre will remain open.

Outreach: L'Association des jeunes de la rue (Community Outreach Program) will provide overnight services to make contact with people on the street and to transport individuals to shelters. Shelters do not have the authority to confine individuals without their consent. Outreach workers will be equppied with extra clothing, blankets and coffee for those who choose not to access shelters.

Hot Line, 675-6422: L'Association des jeunes de la rue will operate an overnight phone line to direct callers to appropriate services and to take calls from concerned citizens.
