Organizations that want to help seniors make a difference in the lives of others, and in their communities, are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in federal funding, said Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle.

The New Horizons for Seniors program typically involves seniors by:
-promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations;
-engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others;
-expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse;
-supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and
-providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors.

“The government website provides a list of approved projects from last year that should help applicants in matching their needs with the program objectives,” Gravelle said. “Many of these agencies struggle financially with little resources, so hopefully this will be a source of revenue. ”

The deadline to apply is July 5, 2013.

Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, coalitions or networks, municipalities, educational institutions, First Nations organizations, school boards and public health and social service institutions.
