Today's a special day for a Grade 6 École catholique Félix-Ricard, Darquise Frappier, and her family.

The young volunteer is being honoured at Queen's Park today with an Ontario Junior Citizen Award from the Ontario Community Newspaper Association. Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell will make the presentation to Darquise and 11 other deserving Ontario youngsters.

A talented musician, the 11-year-old has put performed for charity at several local events, helping raise more than $28,000 for numerous charities.

Beyond music though, Darquise fundraised to fund the purchase of soccer balls for the Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury’s soccer program. She's donated items and money to the Grace Orphanage in Jamaica.

And recently, along with her sister Mélanie-Rose (also a dedicated volunteer whose efforts have earned her countless awards, including a Community Builders Award from Northern Life), Darquise collected warm clothing for the city’s homeless population on behalf of the of the Cold Shelter in Sudbury.

And last year, Darquise was a finalist for the Me to We Canadian Living Award for her own volunteer efforts.

Although Darquise was selected to receive a Junior Citizen award, she wasn't the only Sudburian nominated. Brothers Soren and Quade Howald were nominated as well.

The Howald boys have racked up, literally, thousands of volunteer hours between them, donating their time teaching judo, helping with the Human League's Soap Box Derby event and giving their skills for free to make life better for others.
