One woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a fire at an apartment building in Minnow Lake Saturday evening.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a call of a structure fire at around 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 3 at an eight-unit apartment building on Barry Street in Minnow Lake.

A total of 21 firefighters responded to the blaze from four different fire stations.

The fire was caused by a candle that caused a mattress to catch fire. The flames spread throughout the unit and in total, four of the units in the building were damaged by fire and smoke. Damage estimates are around $300,000.

A woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation but her injuries were not deemed to be serious.

"Candles are a common cause of home fires. Keep lit candles safely away from children and pets and blow out all candles before leaving the room," said GSFS in a news release.

"Secure candles in a sturdy holder in a location where they can’t be knocked over. Fires caused by candles are easily preventable."
