It’s the Day of Mourning today across the country.
Each year on April 28, Canadians pay respect to the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured or disabled on the job.
The Sudbury and District Labour Council will be holding its annual Day of Mourning ceremony this morning.
This year’s ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Fraser Auditorium at Laurentian University. The ceremony will be followed by a lowering of the flags.
Local politicians including Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré, Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre and Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas will all be speaking at the event, as will Greater Sudbury mayor Brian Bigger.
Labour unions have been at the forefront of pushing for workplace protections for workers on the job. Recognizing that not all injuries are physical, unions are also taking on mental illness and factoring it into what makes a workplace healthy and safe.
The Day of Mourning is globally recognized and it is observed in more than 80 countries around the world. On this day, communities across the world join together to mourn the unnecessary loss of workers’ lives and renew our commitment to fight for the living.
