The funds collected through the past six months of fundraising by the Sudbury Food Bank and its volunteers were disbursed Wednesday through the fall give campaign.

A total of $243,753 was doled out to the food bank's 48 member agencies, bringing the grand total of funds raised over the years to $8,230,000. Member agencies operate to supply a food safety net for individuals and families who are hungry.

In addition to the dollars given to agencies to buy food, the food bank has also distributed more than 3,641 tons of perishable and non-perishable food items since its inception.

Greg Fontaine, president of the board for Sudbury Food Bank, said he feels fortunate to be part of a community like Greater Sudbury.

“We are extremely fortunate at this time of year to give the funding to our member agencies,” Fontaine said. “It allows them to help those in need. We operate on little to no government funding, so this money is generated purely on the generosity of Sudburians.”
