Mayor John Rodriguez recently announced that June 13 to 21 is Sudbury Food Bank Awareness Week in the City of Greater Sudbury.

The designated week will raise awareness of hunger issues in the region. For example, people may not be aware that food bank are depleted during the summer because of a lack of food drives and fundraisers over these months, stated a news release.

At the mayor's announcement in Tom Davies Square recently, two major donations were made to start off the week. Vale Inco donated $20,000 to help the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cruzin for Food Cars Show. A $25,000 donation was presented by Great West Life to the food bank and organizers of the Downtown Rotary Blues for Food Festival.

“This week has just began and already started off with a bang," said Dan Xilon, administrator for the Sudbury Food Bank.

During Sudbury Food Bank Week, the City of Greater Sudbury will assist in raising awareness and food stocks by running the Sudbury Transit Food Drive.

On Father's Day, buses and volunteers, along with car clubs vehicles, set up in all Your Independent Grocers parking lots from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to collect food and donations.

During the course of the week, several other organizations will be raising awareness through special events.

The week culminates on June 21 with the 18th annual Downtown Rotary Blues for Food event on Durham Street. The event features family day and free concerts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. To join in on the event, donate non-perishable food items or cash for the food bank. The purchase of $10 genuine Blues Brothers Sunglasses keepsakes will also grant access to the event.

Also on June 21, the Cruzin for Food Car Show, hosted by the Sudbury Corvette Club, will be held  the at Science North  from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
