A former member of the Laurentian University Voyageurs hockey team is scheduled to head to trial in February to answer to charges of sexual assault.

The player, Blake Luscombe, is no longer with the team and is no longer a member of the university. The 22-year-old forward was charged Nov. 15, 2016, with one count of sexual assault under section 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The university hasn't commented on the case, but Sudbury.com has learned the incident took place away from campus and was not connected to any university event or function.

Luscombe's case was in Sudbury court this week and will return Jan. 18 for a trial confirmation hearing. The trial itself is scheduled to begin Feb. 15 and wrap up Feb. 22.
