Dr. Jacob “Jake” Holub, family physician and former team doctor for the Sudbury Wolves died Dec. 15 at the age of 69.  His obituary states he died on Long Lake “with his loving family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.”

A passionate Toronto Maple Leafs’ fan, Holub served as his hometown team’s doctor for many years. His contributions to the team were honoured Dec. 15, when Ken McKenzie, coach of the Wolves, dedicated the game to Holub.

Holub enjoyed “great camaraderie” with his fellow Idylwylde Golf and Country Club members, golfing and winter vacationing with family and friends in Innisbrook, his obituary reads. “Jake found profound solace at his remote camp on Burns Lake and family cottage on Fairbanks Lake.”

Holub married Deris, “the love of his life” and they spent the next 41 years together. He leaves behind their children, Jennifer, Scott, and Allison and three grandchildren, Ronan, Maddix, and Yelizaveta. Predeceased by his parents, Roman and Margaret, and his brothers, Bryan and Tom, he is survived by three brothers, Bruce, Craig and Blair.

His obituary states that Holub was proudest watching his two grandsons play hockey, and fulfilled by the many “hats” he wore. “Husband, father, poppa, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, doctor, coach, and colleague,” it reads. “Jake just loved life, and everyone around who shared it with him.”

The family also wished to thank his treating health professionals in Canada and the United States as well as a dear friend, Suman, who helped Holub navigate the medical system “for the best medical care.”

His obituary states his family wanted to acknowledge two close friends. “Jamie Wallace was a sixth brother to him, he was able to make so many beautiful memories for Jake and his family, for that we are forever grateful,” it reads. “Along with Scott MacDonald, who never backed down from a plan executed by Jake, even if he did not think it was the best of ideas.”

A funeral will be held at All Nations Church, 414 St Raphael Street, on Friday, Jan. 12, at 11:00 a.m. (friends may call after 10:30 a.m.) A reception will follow at Idylwylde Golf & Country Club, (400 Walford Road). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dr. Jake Holub Bursary Fund would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
