Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario (CSPGNO) invites families to its second annual family fair, entitled EXPLO!, Making Families Shine. CSPGNO will be collaborating with the Sudbury and District Health Unit.

Under the theme “Je fais une différence” (I make a difference), EXPLO! will be held at École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier April 14 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

People are invited to come out and have fun in a wide variety of dynamic workshops based on leisure activities.

Supper will be served and child care services will be available on site. There will also be draws, surprises and prizes to be won.

Families are invited to bring a donation of their choice (non-perishable food items, personal care products, books, etc.) for the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth (SACY), a not-for-profit organization that provides free services and programs to youth in need in Greater Sudbury.

This event is part of a wider CSPGNO initiative promoting resilience and positive relationships between parents and children.

Through this initiative, the school board provides parents with information and opportunities to foster positive relationships and an approach based on the child’s strengths and personal assets to develop his or her resilience. EXPLO! has attracted a great deal of interest. Hundreds of participants have already registered and the fair promises to be an energizing experience.

EXPLO! workshops offer a wide variety of activities, such as making dog treats, an inflatable house with firefighters, Rwandan dance, knitting scarves for the homeless, building a bird feeder from recyclable materials, making personal care products, protecting northern Ontario animals, making a turtle out of play dough, and much more.

Renowned speaker Dr. Wayne Hammond will offer a workshop on strategies that parents can use to help their children develop desired character traits.

Hammond is the president and executive director of Resiliency Initiatives and an adjunct professor at the University of Calgary’s School of Medicine.

Over the past 20 years, he has been working mainly with at-risk youth and their families, focusing on substance abuse, violence and other related mental health problems.

The eccentric explorer Atlas will present his zany show “Le monde est petit!” (It’s a small world!). As he tries to understand the causes and effects of humanity and looks for solutions and allies to overcome his challenges.

His aim is to make people think, to take a stand and to become socially engaged by finding tools to help each individual become more involved in society and perhaps even an active and inspired champion of change. Through his comical anecdotes and amusing adventures, his fellow travellers will take a trip around the world without even leaving their seats.
