The Valley Community Theatre, housed in The Capreol Millennium Resource Centre, has received $32,746 through the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) to improve accessibility for Canadians with disabilities.

A funding announcement was made Jan. 25 by Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré, on behalf of the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.

This project will allow the theatre to install an outside wheelchair lift at the front entrance, by fitting the Centre’s heavy doors with automated push-button doors, and the installation of a Mobilift wheelchair lift inside to allow residents using wheelchairs or walkers to travel the length of the Centre’s main floor without restrictions.

“Today the Valley Community Theatre is taking an important step in a transformation that is taking place in Capreol and in communities across Canada—helping Canadians of all abilities to fully participate in and contribute to their workplaces and communities by making these environments accessible," said Serré.

"I encourage all eligible businesses and community organizations to join their efforts and make our communities and workplaces more inclusive for all Canadians.”

One bathroom will also be renovated to accommodate residents with disabilities.

With these renovations, disabled individuals will be able to attend live theatre and concerts, utilize the fitness centre and attend with Greater Sudbury’s Mayor, Councillor, Police Services and other vital groups.

They will be able to take part in planning town festivals, celebrations, and town improvements. As a result, these activities will be available to all citizens, not just able bodied ones.

“The Valley Community Theatre is extremely grateful to the Government of Canada for the funds provided through the Enabling Accessibility Program to the 'Millennium Accessibility Project'," said Della Gauthier, Vice-President of the Valley Community Theatre.

"This project strives to create accessibility to the only building in our community that is designed to promote health and well-being through the services offered. With the completion of this project all residents of Capreol will have the opportunity to utilize these services.”
