International Youth Day will take place in Sudbury on Aug. 12, in a celebration aimed at empowering local youth.
The festivities get underway at Let's Scrabbalatte on Elm Street at 6 p.m. Entry is free for all youth between the ages of 13 and 17.
There will be snacks, drinks, games and live entertainment throughout the night for all who attend. The event will be the culmination of the SWEAC (Sudbury Workers Education Advocacy Centre) and The SPOT Change for Teens fundraiser.
“August 12 will be the last day for anyone to drop change at any of the locations for this fundraiser,” said Nicole Beaulieu, executive director, SWEAC.
“The money raised will be used to fund workshops and programs to help empower and educate our local youth.”
The funding for the workshops will be split up 50/50 between SWEAC and The SPOT. The workshops focus on subjects such as life skills, workers' rights and youth empowerment.
“A lot of youth in these workshops will just be entering the workforce, so the workers' rights workshop is an important one,” said Beaulieu.
The entertainment doesn't stop at board games, as youth are invited to participate in an open mic night where they are free to get up on stage and sing, recite a poem or play a musical instrument.
“We're hoping for a great turnout and even though this is International Youth Day, everyone is invited to come out and celebrate our youth,” said Beaulieu.
Admission is free for youth ages 13 to 17, but they are asked to phone The SPOT first to reserve their tickets at 705-671-1965.
Tickets for anyone else who interested will be between $6 and $7.
