Sudbury's first Giant Sunflower Competition took place at The Market Sunday, Oct. 1.

With big sunflowers, small sunflowers and some sunflowers that appear to have cross-pollinated, well over 20 participants came out for their flowers to be judged.  
Sudbury’s Community Garden Network said in a press release it thanks everyone that participated in the Russian Mammoth Sunflowers growing contest, their admirers who came to judge the event and all volunteers. 

The winners were:

Tallest Sunflower: Delki Dozzi (Ward 1) Community Garden – 141 inches 
Largest Sunflower Head: Garson Community Garden – 18.5 inches
Children's Tallest Sunflower: Danica, 116 inches 
Children's Largest Sunflower Head: Lillian A., 15 iches 

Prizes were donated by Toppers Pizza Canada and Eat Local Sudbury. 

This event is the first for Sudbury’s Community Garden Network to create awareness for the great network of gardeners that exist in this city and the community gardens that are on offer. 

The Sudbury Community Garden Network is an information and resource-sharing network that supports the sustainable development of community gardens across the City of Greater Sudbury and surrounding areas.
