Girl power! Sudbury Girls Run: fit, fun, festive female empowerment

LU track the site for the fourth annual event

Laurentian University’s track field was covered in a hue of pink. Hundreds of Sudbury women, young and old, gathered to participate in the 4th annual Girls Run.

The Spanish tunes used to warm up could be heard from a distance in preparation for the run.

As you come closer to the field you could feel the excitement in the footsteps of these women.

“Girls Run is a way for women to set goals for themselves and watch themselves accomplish them,” Chantal Dagostino, organizer of the event said.

As the warm-up completed, the girls made their way to the start line behind the bleachers.

They lined up side by side, supporting and encouraging each other.

With the sound of the horn around 400 girls were afoot to accomplish their individual goals.

Girls Run Sudbury is similar to other races yet differs on its core purpose.

“This event is to encourage girls to stay active and participate in sports,” Dagostino  Explained.

“Girls often drop out of physical sports for fear of being perceived negatively, thus by surrounding themselves with role models, we can hopefully encourage them to stay active,” Dagostino said.
