Girls and their parents are invited to participate in the Go ENG Girl/GÉNiales, les filles event at Laurentian University Oct. 16.

The free one day event is for girls in Grades 7 though 10 to learn about programs of study and careers in engineering.

ONWIE – the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering – organizes and hosts the event at 12 locations across the province. Each of the 15 schools and faculties of engineering in Ontario will take part in the 2010 event.

At Laurentian University campus, the event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

With hands-on workshops that have participants designing, creating, and sharing, the event teaches girls that engineering can be a lot more fun and involve more imagination than they might think at first.

At previous Go ENG Girl/GÉNiales, les filles events, girls have designed everything from earthquake-proof structures to toothpaste and “green-powered cars,” while their parents connect with engineering students and professionals in an informative panel discussion.

Over the past five years, more than 4,500 girls have participated in the annual events. Girls can register for Go ENG Girl/GÉNiales, les filles online at www.ospe.on.ca/goenggirl. Space is limited, so girls are encouraged to register early.

This event one of several initiatives created to promote increased participation of women in engineering.

“Go ENG Girl/GÉNiales, les filles is a fun opportunity for girls to meet others who share their interests and to find out firsthand how these amazing careers are making a difference to our environment and quality of life,” says Dr. Valerie Davidson, NSERC/RIM Chair for Women in Science & Engineering.
