Greater Sudbury managed to recruit 19 new doctors in 2017.

And among that group is a Sudburian who returned home to practice emergency medicine, a Calgarian who has travelled to 39 countries and a Francophone Sudburian starting a bilingual family medicine practice.

Health Sciences North reported among those 19 new docs are six family doctors, two emergency medicine doctors and 11 specialists. Eight of them completed their training in the North, at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Among the 19, specializations include emergency medicine, cardiac anaesthesia, critical care medicine, interventional cardiology, cardiac CT imaging, gastroenterology, medical oncology, respirology, colorectal surgery, vascular/interventional radiology, psychiatry and urologic oncology.

Seven of the new doctors hail from either Greater Sudbury or Northern Ontario.

Since 2000, more than 260 new physicians have established practices in the Nickel City. Every year, Health Sciences North (HSN), the City of Greater Sudbury, and the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce collaborate to attract new physicians.
