Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Wolves GM optimistic

There may have been some bumps and bruises along the road with a few unforeseen circumstances last season, but the Sudbury Wolves roster is taking the form of a team that GM Rob Papineau is proud of. The general manager from Sudbury went through his second offseason at the helm by drafting Quinton Byfield first overall and Jack Thompson in the second round. Then he and his staff picked up goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in the import draft and received a commitment from the NHL prospect. Some minor changes rounded out the offseason and he believes this is a roster that can begin to turn the franchise around. “Our expectation is to get back to the playoffs. It was a year last year that I don’t think any of us planned on in regards to how it sort of rolled out from pretty much the opening faceoff. It’s not something we enjoyed having to go through it. It’s behind us now and our expectation is that this group returns to the playoffs,” said Papineau. Find more on this story here.

Halloween fun for all Boyles and Ghouls

It's October, which means Halloween is just around the corner. Northern Ontario’s most popular Fall family event – Halloween at Dynamic Earth – returns Friday Oct. 5 to carve out another season of family fun, fright and delights. Halloween at Dynamic Earth, featuring the 5th anniversary of the fan favourite Pumpkinferno and the return of the Tunnel of Terror, once again lights up the night every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights until Sunday, Oct. 28. Boys and ghouls can purchase tickets online at DynamicEarth.ca/Halloween or at the door. “We’re very excited to offer new experiences this year such as a new set in Pumpkinferno, Friday Night Frights in the Tunnel of Terror, and new activities along with the return of the Big Nickel Show with a Halloween twist!” said Jennifer Beaudry, Senior Scientist at Dynamic Earth. “Halloween at Dynamic Earth is sure to create longlasting memories for visitors of all ages, whether it’s your first time or you love returning year after year!” For the story, click here.

M'Chigeeng First Nation responds

M'Chigeeng First Nation says it disputes the comments made by Rainbow District School Board regarding a Sept. 24 meeting. The First Nation says the information provided by the school board in the article “greatly misrepresents” the fact of the meeting. The meeting, says a news release, was held to review and discuss one M'Chigeeng First Nation student. In the article, Norm Blaseg, RDSB's director of education, says the meeting was organized to speak about what may have led to the Sept. 14 brawl at Manitoulin Secondary School and how to move forward. "We chose to focus on the opportunities more than anything else because you can't change the past," said Blaseg in the article. "The opportunities we're looking at are what types of supports our kids need, both from the perspective of a First Nations lens, and from the student population at MSS. There was a lot of dialogue about that, but there was also lots of dialogue about it's not just about the students; it's more holistic than that, and it has to deal with the social, emotional and other challenges associated with a child in their teenage years." Police need help identifying individuals

Greater Sudbury Police Service is asking for help to identify a number of individuals who may have been involved or witnessed an assault on Sept. 14. A 32-year-old man was viciously assaulted in the area behind Pizza Pizza located at 52 Elm St. He was rushed to hospital by paramedics. The motive for the attack is unknown at this time.
