Green Stairs Art Walk celebrates 10th anniversary

Architecture school jumps into the fold

The Green Stairs Project Committee celebrated the unveiling of the 10th edition of the Green Stairs Art Walk on June 8.

Located off Ste Anne Road and overlooking the city's downtown, the stairs are lined with more than 70 pieces of art, created by Sudbury students from four different schools.

Marymount Academy, College Notre Dame and Sudbury Secondary School have all been part of the intiative since its inception, with St. Albert students jumping on board four years ago.

"It's important to have youth involved in this project, because they now become stewards for the area," said Ward 10 Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann, who was behind the creating of the Green Stairs Art Walk, way back in 2006.

Artist Will Morin installs the pieces on frames that have been built out of repurposed playground equipment and scrap metal. While Morin has been the lead man when it comes to getting the students' work mounted, when he decides to hang up his toolbelt, there appears to be a willing party to take the reins.

Laurentian University's McEwen School of Architecture students took part in this year's Green Stairs project, designing and building a bench that is situated at the bottom of the stairs on Ste Anne Road.

Fourth year LU student Max Vos Coupal lent Morin a hand on Friday morning, and says being involved with downtown projects is a big priority at the school.

"My girlfriend went to Marymount so I've known about this project for a while now," said Vos Coupal. "This is the first year I've actually been involved with it though. The School of Architecture likes to get involved with the downtown and contribute in projects like this."

In addition to sprucing up the area, the art walk is designed to increase safety in the area by way of increased foot traffic.

"We want to maintain the safety of the area by increasing the number of pedestrians in the area," said Landry-Altmann. "This was a vision that has really evolved over the years through everyone who has been involved."
