A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Villa St. Gabriel Villa on Friday, Oct. 16, on Regional Rd. 15 in Chelmsford.

The new 128-bed, long-term care home is being built on a five acre parcel of land, and will have two storeys with a floor area of 90,000 square feet.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $21 million.

The federal government contributed $1.9 million, and the provincial government committed $2 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

The city of Greater Sudbury pledged $2 million to the Villa, and St. Joseph's Health Centre contributed about $15 million to the project.

The St. Gabriel's Villa Capital Fundraising Campaign raised $729,000 thus far, towards the purchase of equipment and furniture.

The facility will open in January 2011.
