GSDC gives $50,000 to Le Salon du livre

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) recently approved funding valued at $50,000 for Le Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury.

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) recently approved funding valued at $50,000 for Le Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury. This contribution will assist with its third literary festival, which will take place from May 8 to 11 at Market Square.

Since its inception in 2004, Le Salon du livre's literary festival has grown to become a provincial and national gathering place for the literary public. The festival, which is held every two years, is the only one of its kind in Greater Sudbury. Le Salon du livre actively promotes published authors of French-language literature, while expanding in areas of recruitment, international recognition and innovation for francophone authors, said a news release.

“Le Salon du livre has made extensive contributions to our community throughout the past several years,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez, in a news release. “Greater Sudbury is home to a vibrant francophone community, and I am very pleased to see Le Salon du Livre's commitment and support for French-language literature and francophone authors.”

“I am very happy that we were able to support Le Salon du livre in its endeavours,” said GSDC Chair Guy Labine, in a news release. “The arts and culture sector is a key component of the Development Corporation's strategic plan – in fact, it is represented by our second economic development engine, ‘a city for the creative, curious and adventuresome'. Le Salon du livre has contributed to the economic development of our community in a number of ways, including job creation, tourism, and demand for new businesses.”

In 2006, the festival hosted by Le Salon du livre attracted 17,000 people over a four-day period and resulted in approximately $300,000 being reinvested in local businesses, suppliers and workers.

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation is the economic development arm of the City. Consisting of a 17-member board of directors, and supported by City staff, the GSDC acts as a catalyst for economic development initiatives, and supports the attraction, development and retention of business in the community.
