GSDC provides funding to Theatre Cambrian

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) has approved $20,000 in funding for a feasibility study being undertaken by Theatre Cambrian, said a news release.

This study will examine the development requirements and costs involved with converting the former St. Eugene Church into a performance space.

Theatre Cambrian purchased the property in September 2007 with the intention of creating its own performance space. This will allow the organization, which has always staged productions in facilities belonging to other groups, to choose production dates and have access to permanent space for storage and workshops. Theatre Cambrian has also converted the former rectory on the property into student housing, which not only assists with the costs of operating the facility but also provides a very valuable commodity in the community.

“Supporting organizations such as Theatre Cambrian is an essential part of economic development,” said GSDC Chair Guy Labine. “Theatre companies contribute directly to our community’s economy by purchasing supplies and services from local businesses, and they also help to attract and retain new companies and trained professionals by improving quality of life in Greater Sudbury.”

Theatre Cambrian, a non-profit community theatre company, is currently in its 21st season, and annually stages two musical productions andthree dinner theatres.
